How to Wash a Wrapped Car

Updated: 20 September 2024

Vehicle wraps are a popular choice for car enthusiasts and businesses alike, offering a cost-effective way to change a car's appearance or display advertising. However, to keep your wrapped vehicle looking vibrant and fresh, proper maintenance is essential, which may differ from traditional car wash methods. As a general rule, we advise cleaning your wrapped car in a similar way to how you would look after high-quality paint work. Today, we’ll outline how to clean your wrapped car, featuring tips from our car-wrapping expert team at Complete Graphics.

5 Easy-to-Follow Steps to Wash Your Wrapped Vehicle

By following these steps, you will maximise the life of your wrap and have your vehicle looking squeaky clean in no time at all!

  1. Rinse the Vehicle: Begin by rinsing your vehicle with clean water to remove loose dirt, mud and debris. Use a hose with a gentle spray nozzle to avoid high pressure, which can lift the edges of the wrap. Just as you would with washing any car, start at the roof and work your way down.
  2. Prepare the Cleaning Solution: Mix a PH-neutral car wash soap with water in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage vinyl wraps.
  3. Wash the Vehicle: Using a soft mitt, wash the vehicle, targeting particularly dirty areas. Ensure that the mitt does not have any stones or grit which may cause damage or scratch the wrap on your car (the same applies to non-wrapped cars for protecting paintwork). Again, start with washing the roof, and then work your way down.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: After washing each section, rinse it immediately with clean water to prevent the soap from drying on the wrap, using a low-pressure hose. Make sure all soap residue is removed, as this can cause discolouration or marks on the wrap.
  5. Dry and Inspect the Vehicle: Using a microfiber towel, pat dry the vehicle (avoid rubbing it). Ensure no water spots are left behind, as these can leave mineral deposits. Once the vehicle is dry, inspect it for any spots you may have missed.

Top Tips to Maintain a Wrapped Vehicle

We’ve compiled a list of top tips to try with your car to promote the longevity of your wrapping.

  • DO use a ceramic coating shortly after the car is wrapped (more on this shortly)
  • DO use a PH-neutral car shampoo to reduce the risk of colour fading on your wrap
  • DO remove contaminants promptly, such as tree sap or bird droppings, to prevent long-term staining
  • DO park in the shade where possible, as UV rays can cause gradual discolouration
  • DON’T use abrasive tools - instead, stick to soft, non-abrasive materials instead
  • DON’T use automated car washes, as the high-pressure jets can damage the wrap

Ceramic Coating

Using ceramic coating on your wrapped vehicle can add approximately £200 to £350 + VAT to its value. Ceramic coating typically has a lifespan of 1-2 years, and the hydrophobic properties protects the car from UV damage and other general wear and tear. It is best to add this shortly after your car has been wrapped for instant protection.

However, if you didn’t add it at the time you had the wrap first installed, ceramic coating sprays can be bought from many motoring shops such as Halfords, and can be used to protect areas of general paintwork as well as car wrapping.

FAQs

Can you jet wash or pressure wash a wrapped car?

You should not jet wash or pressure wash a wrapped car, as the high pressure can cause damage to the wrap, including the lifting of edges.

Can you go through a car wash with a vinyl wrap?

Automated car washes, especially those with brushes, can damage your car wrap by causing lifting, tearing, or scratching. It is best to hand wash your wrapped vehicle to ensure its longevity and maintain its appearance.

How do I remove bird droppings, tree sap, or other tough contaminants from the wrap?

Promptly remove contaminants using a soft cloth, warm water and a PH-neutral shampoo. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can damage the wrap. You could consider keeping a pack of water-based wipes in your gloves box for a quick clean on the go.

Will washing my wrapped car fade the colours?

Proper washing techniques and using the right products will not fade the colours of your wrap. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight without protection can cause fading over time, so use a ceramic coating and avoid parking in the sun where possible.

What should I do if the edges of the wrap start to lift?

If you notice the edges of the wrap lifting, avoid washing or scrubbing those areas until they are repaired. Contact our team to address any lifting or peeling issues to prevent further damage.

How long should you wait to wash a car after a vinyl wrap?

You should refrain from washing your car for the first week after it is wrapped. Depending on the weather, you may need to wait slightly longer, especially if it is very cold.
